Conor Gallagher is the Tottenham signing Ange Postecoglou had long pushed for but never got, after Daniel Levy blocked the move.

It would be a poetic twist if Conor Gallagher becomes the first high-profile signing of Tottenham’s post-Daniel Levy era, especially considering the former chairman passed on the chance to sign him just 18 months ago.

Ange Postecoglou pushed hard to bring Gallagher to Spurs from Chelsea in the summer of 2024, with the midfielder eager to move to North London. However, SunSport understands Levy blocked the transfer for the second year in a row. Spurs had also explored a move for Gallagher in the summer of 2023 but chose instead to sign James Maddison from Leicester.

Gallagher went on to join Atletico Madrid in 2024, but now appears set to finally complete his long-anticipated switch to Tottenham, 18 months later, after a £35million deal was agreed with the Spanish club.

The 25-year-old England international travelled to London on Tuesday to undergo his medical and is expected to sign a five-and-a-half-year contract. He will be hoping to make his Spurs debut in Saturday’s huge Premier League clash at home to West Ham.

His arrival would be a significant lift for Thomas Frank, who is under pressure and looks set to land the player his predecessor Postecoglou repeatedly wanted but never managed to secure.

Frank is currently dealing with several injuries, including midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, who recently underwent surgery on the hamstring he damaged in last week’s 3-2 loss to Bournemouth. Tottenham confirmed the update in a statement, saying: “We can confirm that Rodrigo Bentancur has undergone surgery on his right hamstring. We’re all with you, Lolo.”

Levy was forced out of the club in September after nearly 25 years in charge. Technically, young Irish striker Mason Melia is the first signing of the post-Levy era, having joined earlier this month. However, that deal was agreed in February 2025 while Levy was still at the club, with Melia unable to officially arrive until turning 18 due to Brexit regulations.

Spurs are also closing in on the signing of highly rated 19-year-old Brazilian left-back Souza, after agreeing a £12.9m fee with Santos. The teenager is expected to travel from Brazil this week, although unlike Gallagher, he is not believed to be scheduled for a medical on Tuesday.
