Tim Sherwood told GB News that Tottenham’s main problem is inconsistency, which he attributes to frequent managerial and player changes.
Looking back on his own time in charge at Spurs, Sherwood argued that constant upheaval has prevented the club from achieving sustained success and winning trophies.
Since Mauricio Pochettino’s departure in 2019, Tottenham have experienced a series of managerial shifts. José Mourinho was hired to deliver immediate results but had a short spell before being replaced by Nuno Espírito Santo. Antonio Conte then came in with a strict, results-focused approach, followed by Ange Postecoglou, who implemented a high-risk, energetic style—effectively another reset for the club.
Sherwood reflected on the situation, saying: “It’s the consistency of their performances. They keep changing managers and have a constant turnover of players. I don’t think they’ve ever been hesitant to spend money. It’s more about how they spend it. If you have consistent performances, you get results and fans are happy. But Spurs’ supporters have been unhappy for a very long time.”
Despite significant spending, fans have criticised Tottenham’s recruitment, saying it often reflects individual managers’ preferences rather than a coherent long-term plan. Players brought in for one system can struggle when a new manager introduces a different style.
The departures of long-standing leaders like Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris, and Jan Vertonghen have weakened both quality and leadership within the squad. Their replacements have had to adapt amid continual change, making it difficult to establish stability.
Comparing the current squad to his 2013–2014 team, Sherwood added: “Well, he’s certainly got more numbers than what I had.”
