Tottenham Hotspur remain determined to complete a deal for Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo despite Manchester City entering the race, according to talkSPORT.
Spurs have already enjoyed a busy summer, signing seven players, with Savinho the latest addition to Roberto De Zerbi’s squad. He follows Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Martin Dubravka, Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali through the door.
Tottenham are also understood to have agreed a season-long loan deal with Manchester City for Omar Marmoush, including an obligation to buy next summer. However, the club are still looking to strengthen further before the transfer deadline.
Gakpo has been one of Tottenham’s key targets throughout the window, with De Zerbi keen to improve his options on the left wing. Talks have continued, although Liverpool want to sign another forward before allowing the Netherlands international to leave.
That situation has opened the door for Manchester City to make their move, but talkSPORT reports that Tottenham remain ahead in the race, with a switch to the Etihad currently considered unlikely.
Liverpool’s pursuit of PSG winger Bradley Barcola could ultimately determine Gakpo’s future. If the Reds manage to bring in the Frenchman, they could be more willing to sanction Gakpo’s departure.
The 27-year-old is reportedly open to joining Tottenham, although Spurs have yet to make a formal offer. Liverpool are believed to value him at around £70m.
Gakpo started Liverpool’s opening Premier League fixture of the season and scored in their 2-2 draw with Newcastle.
Tottenham’s 4.5-Year Gakpo Mission
Tottenham’s interest in Gakpo stretches back much further than this summer. The first reports of Spurs tracking the Dutchman emerged in March 2022, when he was still playing for PSV Eindhoven and before his breakout World Cup campaign.
Liverpool eventually won the race for his signature, forcing Tottenham to pursue alternative attacking targets.
Now, more than four years later, Spurs could finally have the chance to complete their long-standing pursuit of Gakpo.
If Tottenham can get the deal over the line, the Liverpool forward would provide Roberto De Zerbi with another high-quality option in attack and could significantly strengthen the club’s left-wing position.
