Jean-Philippe Mateta’s future at Crystal Palace has become increasingly uncertain in recent days following a dispute over the contract extension option activated by the club.
According to TEAMtalk, Mateta’s representatives recently approached Tottenham to discuss the possibility of a late move before the transfer window closes. A subsequent report suggested Spurs would be ready to act if an opportunity arose, particularly after Aston Villa saw an offer for the French striker rejected.
Tottenham could get Mateta at a reduced price
Football Insider has now reported that Villa’s bid for the 29-year-old France international was turned down, with Tottenham among the clubs monitoring his situation.
Despite the rejected proposal, Mateta is still expected to leave Selhurst Park before the September 1 deadline. Crystal Palace are reportedly prepared to accept around £25m for the striker, who has only one year remaining on his contract.
Tottenham and Aston Villa are not the only clubs interested, with several other Premier League teams also said to be monitoring developments around Mateta as deadline day approaches.
Spurs unlikely to pursue Mateta after Marmoush arrival
However, Tottenham’s chances of signing Mateta appear to have dropped following the arrival of Omar Marmoush.
With Marmoush now officially a Spurs player, Tottenham have plenty of options in the central striker position. That is especially true if they also manage to sign Cody Gakpo, who can provide cover through the middle.
Although Richarlison could leave the club in the coming days, Spurs are unlikely to bring in another traditional number nine as his replacement.
Marmoush is expected to compete with Dominic Solanke for the starting striker role, while Mathys Tel — and potentially Gakpo — can provide additional attacking cover.
