Rayan Cherki quickly apologized during the second half of Manchester City’s FA Cup quarter-final win over Liverpool after being told to remove Hugo Ekitike’s shirt.
The 22-year-old, one of City’s key performers on Saturday, was substituted in the 71st minute for Tijani Reijnders. After leaving the pitch, Cherki swapped shirts with his France teammate Ekitike, who had also been substituted as Liverpool trailed 4-0 at the Etihad.
Moments later, Cherki was spotted wearing a Liverpool shirt on the bench next to Gianluigi Donnarumma. He was promptly told to take it off and, looking embarrassed, raised his hand in apology.
The clip aired on beIN Sports, drawing reactions online, with many fans and staff unimpressed by the gesture.
On the pitch, Manchester City secured a 4-0 victory to reach the FA Cup semi-finals, thanks to a hat-trick from Erling Haaland and a goal from Antoine Semenyo.
The story is ongoing, with further updates expected.
