Tottenham Hotspur are said to be considering a January swoop for Borussia Mönchengladbach left-back Luca Netz as they continue to strengthen their defence ahead of the season’s run-in.
Spurs are already close to completing the signing of Santos teenager Souza, but that move has not slowed their pursuit of further full-back reinforcements. Rather than viewing Netz as a replacement option, the club reportedly see the German as an addition who would instantly boost depth and competition on the left side.
Tottenham have been tracking Netz for some time, and his contract situation has heightened their interest. With fewer than six months remaining on his deal, Mönchengladbach may be tempted to cash in during the winter window instead of risking a free transfer in the summer, potentially allowing Spurs to strike a bargain.
Despite being just 22, Netz is highly rated in Germany and beyond, often tipped as one of Europe’s standout young full-backs. He has made eight Bundesliga starts this season and remains a dependable figure for Gladbach. Since joining from Hertha Berlin more than four years ago, he has racked up 121 appearances in all competitions, registering three goals and 18 assists, including 14 outings this campaign.
At international level, Netz has represented Germany across several youth categories, from U15 to U21, underlining his long-term potential despite not yet earning a senior cap.
Why Spurs want a left-back
Tottenham’s interest makes sense given their ongoing problems at left-back. Destiny Udogie has struggled with injuries and has managed only six Premier League starts under Thomas Frank, forcing the manager to rely on Djed Spence and other stopgap solutions. While Souza is expected to arrive this month, the 19-year-old has no European experience, making Netz an appealing, more battle-tested option.
His availability at a reduced price only strengthens Spurs’ hand, with reports claiming the club are keen to speed up negotiations and wrap up a deal before the window shuts. Early talks are believed to have already taken place.
Should both Souza and Netz arrive, Thomas Frank would suddenly have real depth at left-back, allowing for rotation, reduced injury risk, and greater tactical flexibility across domestic and European competitions.
Paratici nearing Spurs exit
Off the pitch, changes are also expected at board level. Tottenham sporting director Fabio Paratici is reportedly set to depart after the January transfer window, with the Italian planning a return home for personal reasons and linked with a senior role at Fiorentina.
His exit would bring an end to a significant and sometimes turbulent spell in North London, during which he played a key role in reshaping the squad. As a result, this January window could prove to be his final major influence on Tottenham’s transfer strategy.
