£80m Defender Eyes Liverpool as Guehi Snub Leaves Slot in Trouble
Inter centre-back Alessandro Bastoni is reportedly interested in joining Liverpool, who are in urgent need of defensive reinforcements after missing out on Marc Guehi.
Liverpool endured another frustrating result on Saturday as relegation-threatened Burnley secured a point at Anfield, with Marcus Edwards cancelling out Florian Wirtz’s opener. The visitors found it disturbingly easy to breach Liverpool’s defence, exposing massive gaps while the home side offered minimal resistance.
The club’s defensive issues run deep, and missing out on Guehi to Manchester City only adds to the pain—especially given Liverpool came close to signing him last summer. TEAMtalk reports that Liverpool did not even attempt to pursue Guehi this month, a surprising oversight considering how weak Arne Slot’s backline has been.
With Guehi off the table, Liverpool are turning attention back to long-term target Alessandro Bastoni. The 26-year-old Inter star has cemented his status as one of Europe’s top defenders and is reportedly open to a move abroad.
A January transfer seems unlikely, and even a summer move would be complicated. Inter are expected to demand a hefty €80 million for Bastoni. Nevertheless, his desire for a new challenge could make a deal possible, and strengthening the defence should be Slot’s top priority—failure to fix the backline could put his job at serious risk.
