Tottenham were held to a 2-2 draw away at Burnley on Saturday, and here’s how the Spurs players rated after a frustrating Premier League afternoon.
Thomas Frank kept faith with the back three that delivered a Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund in midweek. This time, Kevin Danso and Cristian Romero were joined by Micky van de Ven, who returned after missing the European tie through suspension.
Conor Gallagher came back into midfield alongside Yves Bissouma, who made his first start of the season, while Dominic Solanke was handed his first league start of the campaign.
Spurs dominated early on, peppering Martin Dubravka’s goal and forcing several saves. The breakthrough arrived when a half-cleared corner fell kindly to Van de Ven, who smashed a low effort into the net. Despite registering 10 first-half shots, seven of them on target, Tottenham were pegged back just before the interval. Burnley’s first real attack saw Kyle Walker pick out an unmarked Axel Tuanzebe, who finished from close range.
The second half saw chances at both ends. Guglielmo Vicario denied Armando Broja, but Burnley took the lead on 76 minutes despite Spurs having five defenders on the pitch. Lyle Foster’s effort crossed the line after Vicario appeared to save twice, with Destiny Udogie unable to prevent it.
Tottenham did manage a late response as captain Cristian Romero powered home a headed equaliser, but the goal did little to ease the tension, with away supporters chanting for Thomas Frank’s dismissal at full-time.
Player ratings highlights:
Vicario (6): Erratic distribution early on, solid in one-on-ones, unlucky with Burnley’s second.
Danso (5): Patchy passing and a quiet defensive display.
Romero (8): At fault in the build-up to Burnley’s first, but redeemed himself with a crucial late header.
Van de Ven (7): Scored again and defended well, especially against Broja.
Porro (5): Sloppy early on and substituted at half-time.
Gallagher (5): Energetic pressing without much end product.
Bissouma (7): Strong and combative in the first half, faded after the break.
Odobert (7): Lively throughout and delivered the cross for Romero’s goal.
Xavi Simons (5): Moments of quality mixed with careless passing.
Spence (7): Influential in build-up play and solid defensively.
Solanke (6): Linked play well but looked short of sharpness.
Substitutes Udogie, Tel and Gray made little impact, while Dane Scarlett tried to spark something late on.
