Thomas Frank’s position at Tottenham is under increasing scrutiny following yet another underwhelming Premier League outing.
Spurs were held to a 2-2 draw by Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday, a result that leaves them only eight points above the relegation places.
Micky van de Ven put Tottenham ahead, but goals from Axel Tuanzebe and Lyle Foster turned the game on its head before Cristian Romero’s late header salvaged a point for the visitors.
Frank was jeered by the travelling supporters at full-time, underlining the widening rift between the fanbase and the head coach.
Frank points to injuries, but criticism grows
The Tottenham boss has repeatedly cited injuries as a key factor behind the club’s struggles. James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski are yet to make a competitive appearance under Frank due to long-term problems, while Mohammed Kudus, Rodrigo Bentancur and Ben Davies have also been sidelined in recent weeks.
Lucas Bergvall is the latest setback, with the midfielder expected to be out for up to three months after suffering an ankle injury during the Champions League win over Dortmund.
Ahead of the Burnley clash, Frank even suggested his side were “cursed” by injuries. However, former Newcastle and England striker Alan Shearer has little sympathy.
Shearer offers no excuses
Frank now holds the unwanted record of being Tottenham’s worst permanent manager statistically since ENIC took control in 2021. Spurs have managed just two wins in their last 14 league matches and are edging uncomfortably close to the bottom three.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer dismissed the injury argument, insisting Spurs should still be performing at a far higher level.
“Everyone has injuries,” he said. “They’ve got Solanke back, Kolo Muani on the bench, Odobert, Tel. Even with the injuries, they should be doing much better.
They’ve been unbelievably poor.”
Tottenham now turn their attention to the Champions League, hosting Frankfurt on Wednesday night, knowing a positive result could secure a top-eight finish in the group phase and automatic qualification for the last 16.
