Tottenham Hotspur have struggled this season under Thomas Frank, but a confident win in Frankfurt has secured their place in the Champions League last 16. Finishing fourth in their group means Spurs avoid an extra qualifying round—a welcome relief given the squad’s ongoing injury issues.
In the Premier League, however, Tottenham continue to frustrate. Fans voiced their displeasure last weekend as the team trudged off after salvaging a draw against lowly Burnley.
This month, Conor Gallagher and Brazilian left-back Souza have strengthened Frank’s squad, yet gaps remain, particularly in attack.
Interestingly, Spurs have been fairly efficient in front of goal. With 26 big chances missed but 33 goals scored in the Premier League, Frank’s side are more clinical than many. However, creativity and build-up play remain major issues.
Spanish sources report that Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka has been approached as a potential midfield reinforcement. The 30-year-old, now down the pecking order under Vincent Kompany, has been in “direct contact” about a possible move.
Tottenham are reportedly trying to hijack Atletico Madrid’s pursuit of the German midfielder, whose contract in Munich expires this summer.
Goretzka would bring the experience Spurs sorely need. With an average squad age of just 25.4, Tottenham have the fourth-youngest team in the Premier League, leaving few seasoned players to guide the squad.
