Tottenham technical director Johan Lange has explained the club’s careful stance during the January transfer window, acknowledging that an unforeseen injury crisis heavily influenced their decision-making.
Discussing Spurs’ transfer strategy, Lange admitted the club was taken by surprise by the severity of the injuries, with up to seven players unavailable at a crucial stage of the campaign. Even so, he stressed that Tottenham opted for restraint rather than rushed decisions.
Lange said the club had not expected to enter January facing such a high number of injuries, a situation that inevitably altered their plans. While the circumstances were frustrating, he underlined the importance of maintaining discipline in the market.
He also made it clear that Spurs deliberately avoided panic buys, insisting that short-term fixes often clash with the club’s long-term objectives. With several injured players nearing a return, Lange remains confident that a patient approach will prove beneficial.
According to him, although impulse signings can offer brief reassurance, there is little value in bringing in players who do not fit the club’s plans either immediately or in the future.
Overall, Lange’s remarks underline Tottenham’s commitment to a measured, sustainable approach to squad building, even as injuries mount and pressure from supporters increases — a philosophy likely to shape their future transfer dealings.
