Liverpool’s midfield has emerged as one of their biggest concerns, and Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle highlighted the issue once again.
Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch struggled to provide the defensive balance needed in a two-man midfield. Both pushed forward for Newcastle’s opening goal, leaving the defence exposed and allowing Anthony Elanga to exploit the space on the counter.
The performance underlined why Andoni Iraola and Richard Hughes should consider making a new No. 6 one of Liverpool’s top priorities before the transfer window closes.
Tottenham could open the door for Archie Gray
Liverpool have already been linked with defensive midfielders such as Adam Wharton and Lamine Camara, but another option could now become available — and he would also satisfy the club’s homegrown requirements.
According to BBC Sport journalist Sami Mokbel, Tottenham are interested in Nottingham Forest right-back Neco Williams. While Forest currently have no intention of selling, Spurs’ interest could have an indirect impact on Archie Gray’s future.
If Tottenham manage to sign Williams, they would have Pedro Porro, Williams and Gray capable of playing at right-back. With Gray also capable of operating in midfield, the increased competition could potentially make a move away from north London more appealing.
Liverpool have held a long-term interest in the England international, and despite the transfer deadline fast approaching, a late move cannot be ruled out.
Archie Gray could be an ideal fit for Liverpool
Gray’s versatility would make him an attractive option for Liverpool. Although his strongest position is defensive midfield, he has also shown impressive quality at right-back throughout his career.
His ability to cover multiple positions would give Iraola greater tactical flexibility, while his homegrown status would also help Liverpool address their squad requirements.
A deal would likely require a significant investment, but with Liverpool clearly in need of greater protection in front of their defence, Gray could prove to be a smart addition.
With the season already exposing weaknesses in midfield, bringing in a natural No. 6 could significantly strengthen Liverpool’s chances of competing for silverware.
