GOOD NEWS ON LUCAS BERGVALL POTENTIAL QUICK RETURN SOONER THAN EXPECTE
Lucas Bergvall had been a regular presence in the Tottenham Hotspur side up until January, when his momentum was halted by injury.
On January 20, the Sweden international sustained an ankle problem during Spurs’ Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund. The 20-year-old was substituted in the 62nd minute of the European clash, with Jun’ai Byfield coming on in his place.
Just three days later, Tottenham confirmed that Bergvall had undergone surgery after suffering a high ankle sprain against the German side. While the club acknowledged the procedure, they stopped short of providing a clear timeline for his return.
Doubts over World Cup qualifier involvement
Reports from Sweden last week suggested Bergvall could miss his nation’s upcoming World Cup qualifier against Ukraine in March. Sweden head coach Graham Potter admitted it would be a significant challenge for both Bergvall and his Tottenham teammate Dejan Kulusevski to regain full fitness in time for the crucial fixture.
Subsequent claims indicated that Bergvall might face a spell on the sidelines of between two and three months. However, Swedish outlet Fotboll Direkt have since shared a more encouraging update regarding his rehabilitation.
Encouraging signs in recovery
Following surgery, Bergvall was seen wearing a protective boot, but reports now suggest he has dispensed with it — a clear sign of progress in his recovery. According to Fotboll Direkt, “things are going in the right direction” for the young midfielder.
The current medical assessment reportedly points towards a possible return in approximately six weeks, provided his rehabilitation continues smoothly and he avoids any setbacks. With Sweden scheduled to face Ukraine on March 26, there remains a slim but realistic chance that Bergvall could recover in time. Nevertheless, the outlet describes the situation as a genuine race against time.
Meanwhile, Tottenham are navigating a turbulent period domestically. Earlier this month, the club parted company with Thomas Frank after a disappointing run of results, with Spurs yet to secure a league victory this calendar year. The north London side have since appointed Igor Tudor as head coach until the end of the season, hoping he can steady the ship during a challenging campaign.
