Jean-Philippe Mateta’s future at Crystal Palace is becoming increasingly uncertain after a dispute emerged over the contract extension option recently triggered by the club.
TEAMtalk reports that Mateta’s representatives have made contact with Tottenham over a potential late transfer before the window shuts. Spurs are reportedly prepared to consider a move if the right opportunity presents itself, especially after Aston Villa had an offer for the French forward rejected.
Tottenham could land Mateta for just £25m
Football Insider claims Crystal Palace have turned down Villa’s proposal for the 29-year-old France international, with Tottenham among the clubs keeping a close eye on his situation.
Despite rejecting the initial offer, Palace are still expected to part ways with Mateta before the September 1 deadline. The Eagles are reportedly willing to accept a fee in the region of £25 million, with the striker having just one year left on his current contract.
Tottenham and Aston Villa are not alone in the race, as a number of Premier League clubs are also believed to be monitoring Mateta’s situation ahead of deadline day.
Spurs’ Mateta interest could fade after Marmoush signing
Tottenham’s chances of completing a deal for Mateta, however, appear to have weakened following the arrival of Omar Marmoush.
With Marmoush now officially a Spurs player, Tottenham already have several options capable of playing through the centre. Their attacking depth could increase even further if they complete a move for Cody Gakpo.
Even if Richarlison departs in the final days of the transfer window, Spurs are not expected to immediately seek another traditional No. 9 to replace him.
Marmoush is likely to compete with Dominic Solanke for the starting striker position, while Mathys Tel and potentially Gakpo could offer further attacking options.
The situation remains one to watch closely as deadline day approaches.
