Tottenham Warned: Another Poor Season Could Put the Club in Deeper Trouble

Former senior Tottenham scout Bryan King has warned that the club cannot afford another disappointing campaign after investing heavily in the squad this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, King questioned Tottenham’s recruitment strategy after the club reportedly spent close to £400 million on eight new players as they look to recover from consecutive 17th-place finishes.

Roberto De Zerbi has been handed a long-term contract and received significant backing in the transfer market, with Tottenham also potentially looking to complete a move for Cody Gakpo before the transfer window closes.

However, King believes the pressure is now firmly on Spurs to deliver results.

Tottenham avoided relegation by just two points last season after finishing 17th, following another campaign in the same position. While dropping into the Championship would have been a major financial disaster, another unsuccessful season could create serious problems of its own.

Failure to qualify for European football could leave Tottenham in an increasingly difficult financial position, particularly after years of heavy spending.

King believes the club’s senior leadership must also take a hard look at its recruitment decisions.

«“Tottenham have certainly got to do something. You can’t spend all this money and finish 17th again. You can’t,” King told Football Insider.»

He added that the club’s recruitment department should come under serious scrutiny if the expensive new signings fail to transform the team’s fortunes.

«“I think the top people at Tottenham should start taking a look at themselves, certainly on the recruitment side.”»

King also issued a stark warning about Tottenham’s finances, arguing that if the major investments fail to produce success on the pitch, the club could find itself under even greater financial pressure.

Tottenham are already carrying significant debt, much of which is connected to the enormous cost of building and financing their stadium.

Tottenham’s Financial Situation

Despite their major spending this summer, the club’s financial position remains a concern.

During the 2024-25 season, Tottenham recorded a club-record pre-tax loss of £120.6 million, despite ending their long trophy drought by winning the Europa League.

Since the beginning of the decade, the club has reportedly accumulated losses of around £450 million, while its total net financial debt stood at approximately £831.2 million as of June 2025.

The latest spending spree will place further pressure on the club’s finances, although Tottenham will be hoping that investment in the squad eventually translates into success on the pitch, increased revenues and a stronger financial position.

For De Zerbi and Tottenham, the message is clear: after spending almost £400 million, another 17th-place finish simply cannot happen.
