Tottenham lost 2–0 to Newcastle, but the result has sparked debate over a key second-half incident.
Shortly after the restart, Omar Marmoush raced onto a loose ball inside Newcastle’s box and appeared to be caught by Malick Thiaw, who made contact with the back of Marmoush’s leg. Referee Peter Bankes waved away the appeal, and VAR reviewed the incident without overturning the decision.
Former Premier League striker Jay Bothroyd said the decision was wrong and believed Spurs should have been awarded a penalty. Former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood agreed, arguing that Thiaw made contact with the player rather than the ball and that the incident could have changed the game because the score was still 0–0.
Newcastle eventually won through Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa, leaving Tottenham with back-to-back defeats to start the season.
