Liverpool head into Sunday’s meeting determined to respond after a disappointing 1–0 defeat to Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League. The loss in Istanbul means the Reds still have plenty of work to do before the return leg at Anfield next week.
Despite that setback, Paul Merson believes Tottenham Hotspur are in a far worse situation, sharing a similar view to Chris Sutton. Speaking to Sportskeeda ahead of the game, the former Arsenal midfielder said he expects Liverpool F.C. to secure a comfortable victory.
Merson said it was simply a matter of how many goals Liverpool would score, while also questioning how long Igor Tudor could remain in charge of Spurs. He even suggested the job at Tottenham might not appeal to many managers at the moment.
The pundit predicted a 3–0 win for Liverpool.
The former England international also warned that pressure on Tudor could grow if Tottenham suffer another loss. The interim manager has already faced criticism following a difficult start, with some insiders reportedly viewing his position as increasingly difficult to maintain, although he is still expected to lead the team for the trip to Merseyside.
Merson added that Tottenham may wait until after the Liverpool match before making any decision about Tudor’s future. Since few expect Spurs to take points from the game, another defeat could put his role in serious doubt ahead of their important relegation clash against Nottingham Forest next weekend.
Although Liverpool have shown inconsistency recently — particularly in the defeat to Galatasaray where they created chances but failed to convert them — Merson believes their overall quality should make the difference.
He finished by saying Arne Slot is likely to name his strongest lineup. While Liverpool will still aim to overturn the deficit against Galatasaray in the second leg, Merson stressed that securing a solid league result this weekend is crucial. His final prediction: Liverpool 3–0 Tottenham Hotspur. ⚽🔥
