Jamie Carragher’s 14-Word Reaction to Bradley Barcola’s Liverpool Debut Goes Viral
Bradley Barcola finally made his Liverpool debut on Friday night, coming off the bench during the Reds’ 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town. Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher quickly took to social media to comment on the French winger, with his short message attracting plenty of attention.
The match was effectively decided inside the opening nine minutes, as new Liverpool striker Alexander Isak scored twice to silence the home supporters and put Andoni Iraola’s side firmly in control.
Liverpool were unable to add to their advantage after the break, but Iraola will still be delighted to secure his first Premier League victory as Liverpool manager after draws in his opening two league matches.
The game also marked the long-awaited debut of Barcola, who joined Liverpool from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal that could eventually reach £123 million.
Carragher Praises Gakpo After Barcola’s Debut
Barcola had a relatively quiet introduction to English football. He replaced Victor Munoz in the 64th minute and, according to SofaScore, managed just 12 touches.
Although his pace and attacking ability were evident, the 23-year-old registered no shots or successful dribbles, while producing one key pass.
Carragher nevertheless had his say, posting a 14-word message that quickly went viral:
«“Barcola is going to struggle to get a game with this version of Gakpo.”»
It was actually Cody Gakpo who stole the spotlight. The Netherlands international played a major role in Liverpool’s victory, providing the assists for both of Isak’s goals.
Gakpo has also made an impressive start to the season, having recorded a goal and an assist in each of Liverpool’s opening two league matches.
His form could make it difficult for Barcola to immediately force his way into Iraola’s starting XI.
Interestingly, Carragher’s latest comments represent a change from his previous stance. Before the transfer window closed, the former Liverpool defender had suggested that the club should sell Gakpo to help fund Barcola’s arrival.
Carragher had previously argued that if Liverpool received around £80–85 million for Gakpo, they should consider selling him because Barcola’s arrival would leave the Dutchman as a squad player.
However, after Gakpo’s outstanding start to the campaign, Carragher appears to have changed his position.
Iraola Happy With Barcola’s First Appearance
Iraola was also pleased with what he saw from Barcola during his brief appearance.
The Liverpool boss explained that the winger looked confident on the ball and produced a promising pass during a counterattack. However, he stressed that the club must manage his minutes carefully because he had not played competitive football since the World Cup.
Iraola also admitted that he considered starting Barcola but ultimately decided against it because the forward had not enjoyed a proper pre-season.
Liverpool’s next challenge comes in the Champions League, with Atletico Madrid set to visit Anfield.
