Liverpool have confirmed that sporting director Richard Hughes has stepped down from his position after two years at Anfield.
His departure follows months of speculation about his future, with Hughes now expected to take on a new challenge with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Hughes had informed Liverpool’s ownership earlier this year that he wanted to leave after the summer transfer window. However, all parties agreed that he would remain in his role throughout the transfer period to help the club complete its business and support new manager Andoni Iraola as he settled into the job.
Liverpool have also dismissed suggestions that Hughes was working for Al-Hilal while still employed by the Reds. The club is reportedly satisfied that he did not carry out any duties for the Saudi club during his time completing Liverpool’s summer transfer plans.
During his spell at Liverpool, Hughes was involved in a major period of change at the club, including managerial transitions and significant transfer activity. His exit is another major development as the Reds continue to reshape their structure.
The process of appointing a new sporting director is already underway and is being led by Mike Gordon. In the meantime, Liverpool’s existing football structure will remain in place, with key figures including Julian Ward, Pedro Marques, David Woodfine, Barry Hunter and the senior leadership team continuing their duties.
Hughes’ departure comes at a time of considerable change at Anfield, and Liverpool supporters will now be waiting to see who the club chooses as his long-term replacement.
