The Premier League has released an official explanation for the controversial decision to disallow Morgan Gibbs-White’s apparent opener during Nottingham Forest’s goalless draw with Tottenham on Saturday.
Forest believed they had finally broken the deadlock in the 67th minute when Gibbs-White headed the ball into the net after a chaotic moment inside Tottenham’s penalty area.
However, the celebrations were cut short after VAR intervened and reviewed the incident.
Why Was Gibbs-White’s Goal Disallowed?
Although the handball was difficult to spot during live play, replays showed that the ball had struck the hand of Nottingham Forest defender No. 3, Joe Rodon, immediately before Gibbs-White’s goal.
The Premier League subsequently confirmed that VAR overturned the referee’s original decision to award the goal.
The official explanation stated:
«“VAR checked the referee’s call of goal to Nottingham Forest and determined that Williams handled the ball immediately before scoring, recommending that the goal be disallowed.”»
The referee’s final decision was therefore a direct free-kick to Tottenham.
The decision proved crucial, as Spurs held on for a 0-0 draw and secured a point from the encounter.
The controversial ruling is likely to remain a major talking point among Forest and Tottenham supporters following the final whistle.
