Tottenham Hotspur youngster mirrors a key quality of Harry Kane — and looks prepared to thrive under Roberto De Zerbi

When Harry Kane returned to Tottenham Hotspur at 20 after a modest loan spell at Leicester City in 2013, few could have imagined he would go on to shatter scoring records.

More than ten years later, Spurs may be facing a similar scenario with Will Lankshear, currently on loan at Oxford United — although his time in the Championship has been far more productive.

While it would be premature to label Lankshear as the “next Kane,” the similarities in their career paths are hard to ignore. There is some basis for comparison too, as journalist Malachi Obrey noted that both players share certain qualities. He highlighted Kane’s all-round excellence — from elite finishing to top-level passing — while suggesting Lankshear shows promise as a smart, physical striker who thrives inside the box. However, he still needs to develop other aspects of his game, such as shooting from distance, to reach that level.

Despite areas for improvement, Lankshear is highly regarded by coaches, teammates, and those at Spurs, and many believe he has the potential to become a Premier League striker.

The young forward joined Oxford last August after a challenging 2024/25 season. His early senior experience included a red card against Galatasaray in the Europa League — a match in which he also scored his first senior goal — followed by a quiet loan spell at West Bromwich Albion.

At Oxford, however, he has rediscovered form, scoring 10 goals and adding three assists. After a strong start, he faced competition for minutes under Gary Rowett, often rotating in attack alongside Nik Prelec and Mark Harris. Since Matt Bloomfield took charge, Lankshear has established himself as the team’s main striker and become a fan favourite.

With Oxford battling relegation, nearly half of his goal contributions have come in their last seven matches, underlining his ability to perform under pressure. Obrey described him as a confident player who embraces big moments, even in hostile atmospheres, and continues to get into dangerous positions despite occasional missed chances.

Beyond his technical ability, Lankshear’s attitude has also impressed. He reportedly turned down moves to bigger Championship clubs in January to remain committed to Oxford’s survival fight — a decision that has endeared him to supporters.

He is joined at the club by fellow Spurs youngster Jamie Donley, who has made an impact since returning from injury. Playing in an advanced midfield role, Donley has helped link play and improve Oxford’s attacking threat, contributing with creativity and set-piece quality.

With both players earning strong praise, Tottenham may have two promising talents ready to step up — regardless of what lies ahead for the club.
