Tottenham’s stance on Roberto De Zerbi revealed after Everton stalemate
Roberto De Zerbi’s future at Tottenham Hotspur is reportedly coming under growing scrutiny following Saturday’s goalless draw with Everton.
De Zerbi was brought in late last season with the task of keeping Spurs in the Premier League, eventually doing enough to guide the club away from relegation.
The Italian was then given significant backing during the summer, with Tottenham spending more than £300 million on a major squad rebuild. High-profile additions such as Sandro Tonali, Matheus Fernandes, Omar Marmoush and Jan Paul van Hecke arrived, raising expectations for a much stronger campaign.
However, Tottenham’s start to the 2026/27 season has been disappointing. After four league matches, Spurs have collected just two points and remain dangerously close to the relegation zone. Their latest setback came at home against Everton, where they were held to a 0-0 draw and booed by sections of their own supporters.
De Zerbi still has Tottenham’s backing
Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke claims there are now “increasing doubts” surrounding De Zerbi’s position, although Tottenham are not currently planning a knee-jerk decision to sack him.
O’Rourke explained that every Premier League manager ultimately needs results, and De Zerbi will understand the pressure that comes with such a poor beginning to the season.
He added that one point from the opening matches is far below what Tottenham expected after investing heavily in the squad during the transfer window.
Despite the disappointing results, however, O’Rourke insists the club remain behind De Zerbi and believe he is still the right manager to turn the situation around.
Before the Everton fixture, pundit Chris Sutton had also questioned De Zerbi’s handling of the team’s poor performances, urging the Tottenham boss to accept some responsibility.
Sutton pointed to De Zerbi’s criticism of Spurs’ forwards following the goalless draw with Nottingham Forest, arguing that the manager still has attacking options available to him.
The former striker believes Tottenham will eventually start scoring and winning, but he was doubtful that both problems would be solved immediately against Everton.
