Tottenham crashed out of the Carabao Cup with a 3-1 loss to Liverpool, and fans directed much of their frustration at one player’s performance. Alexis Mac Allister put the hosts ahead in the 21st minute with a strike reminiscent of his recent goal against Atletico Madrid, and Cody Gakpo — a target of Spurs’ summer transfer business — doubled the lead in the 54th. Conor Gallagher pulled one back in the 69th minute after a defensive error, but Dominik Szoboszlai sealed it with a long-range effort in stoppage time.
The loss extends a difficult start to the season for Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham, who remain winless in the league.
Mohammed Kudus was singled out for criticism. The Ghanaian, who missed much of last season with a hamstring injury, has struggled to recapture the form that made him a standout at West Ham. He missed his best chance of the match, saved by Giorgi Mamardashvili, and struggled throughout — completing only one of four crosses and one of four dribbles — before being substituted for Savio in the 75th minute.
Fans on social media reacted strongly, questioning his effort and whether the injury is still affecting him. Comments called his display “insanely lazy,” “disgraceful” and “abysmal,” with some suggesting he looked disengaged or unmotivated.
Kudus arrived from West Ham for roughly £55m last summer with high expectations, but injuries and inconsistent form have made for a difficult start to his Tottenham career.
