A well-known Dutch journalist has revealed that Arne Slot attracted interest from Ajax, but the Liverpool FC manager is not considering a move to Amsterdam at this stage of his career.
The 47-year-old has come under heavy pressure at Anfield following a disappointing second season, a year after guiding Liverpool to a Premier League title in his debut campaign. Despite the recent struggles, the club’s ownership is expected to stick with the former Feyenoord boss heading into next season. Liverpool’s dip in form has not stopped Ajax—widely regarded as the most successful club in Eredivisie history—from making initial contact over the possibility of appointing him, though that interest has not been returned.
Ajax are currently searching for a permanent replacement for interim coach Oscar Garcia. According to Mike Verweij on De Telegraaf’s Kick-off podcast, Slot was among the names considered. He indicated that the Liverpool manager remains firmly in charge at Anfield and has little desire to take the Ajax job at this point.
There are a couple of clear reasons behind that stance, including Slot’s strong ties to Feyenoord—Ajax’s fierce rivals—and the club’s swift dismissal of his former assistant John Heitinga after only a few months in charge.
It’s also likely that if Slot had produced similar results in Amsterdam this season, Ajax’s hierarchy at the Johan Cruyff Arena might not have shown the same patience that Liverpool’s owners have demonstrated. For now, Slot appears committed to continuing his project at Liverpool, and unless results worsen significantly before the end of the campaign, he is expected to remain in charge.
Although his reputation has taken a hit in recent months, his achievements—including league titles in two major European competitions since 2023—ensure he is still respected in the Netherlands. However, past success will carry little weight if Liverpool fail to show clear improvement at the start of next season.
