Guglielmo Vicario may unexpectedly find himself staying at Tottenham this summer, after reports from Italy indicated that Inter Milan are having second thoughts about pursuing the goalkeeper — even though personal terms had reportedly already been agreed. The Italian shot-stopper had been strongly linked with a move back to Serie A, with the reigning Italian champions thought to be preparing a formal approach for the Spurs number one, who was valued by the club at around €20 million.
However, the situation now appears to have taken a significant turn. Italian sources suggest Inter’s hierarchy are reassessing their transfer priorities, with key figures at the club now more inclined to strengthen other areas of the squad rather than spending heavily on a new goalkeeper.
The rethink has been driven in part by the expected departure of veteran keeper Yann Sommer when his contract ends in June, which could pave the way for backup goalkeeper Josep Martinez to step up and claim the starting position for the 2026-27 season. Martinez is increasingly seen within the club as a credible long-term option, and that growing confidence in him appears to be reducing the urgency to sign Vicario. Transfer journalist Matteo Moretto has suggested that Inter are losing conviction in the deal, particularly given Martinez’s readiness to take on the first-choice role.
That said, even if Inter walk away from Vicario, they would likely still need to bring in an experienced goalkeeper to provide genuine competition for Martinez rather than handing him the spot unchallenged.
The 27-year-old Spaniard has made just eight appearances this season, with his campaign also touched by personal tragedy following a road accident in October 2025. Despite limited game time, he remains well thought of at the club. Martinez joined Inter from Genoa in 2024 for €14 million and could now find himself at the centre of the club’s goalkeeping plans going forward — a development that may well put paid to Vicario’s expected departure from Spurs.
