Manchester City could be heading for a dramatic midfield rebuild, with Bernardo Silva and John Stones already gone and Rodri’s future increasingly uncertain.
The situation has reportedly prompted City to draw up a shortlist of potential midfield targets, with Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister among the names being considered.
Ben Jacobs revealed on talkSPORT that Mac Allister has been discussed internally at Manchester City. However, there has been no approach to Liverpool so far, meaning the Argentine is currently only part of City’s early recruitment discussions.
City are not putting all their eggs in one basket. Elliot Anderson has already arrived, while the club are also progressing talks for highly rated Lille youngster Ayyoub Bouaddi. Enzo Fernandez is another option, although Chelsea’s reported £120m valuation could make that pursuit extremely complicated.
Much could depend on Rodri.
Barcelona are reportedly preparing an improved €60m (£51.3m) offer plus bonuses after City rejected their first proposal. With the Spanish giants pushing to bring the midfielder back to La Liga and Rodri having just one year remaining on his contract, City may soon have to make a major decision.
Mac Allister would certainly fit the profile of a player capable of helping rebuild Guardiola’s midfield, but convincing Liverpool to sell to a Premier League rival would be an entirely different challenge.
For now, there is no bid, no negotiation and no contact between Liverpool and Manchester City over Mac Allister. But the fact that his name has entered City’s internal discussions could be one to watch closely.
