Romano Gives Liverpool Transfer Update as Mbaye Deal Goes ‘Off’ and PSG Demand Huge Fee
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Liverpool’s move for Paris Saint-Germain youngster Ibrahim Mbaye is currently “off”, while also providing a fresh update on the club’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola.
Liverpool have found it difficult to strengthen their wing options this summer. The Reds have already added Victor Muñoz, Ronald Araújo and Jeremy Jacquet, but Mohamed Salah’s departure on a free transfer has left the squad in need of another elite winger.
After missing out on Yan Diomande, Liverpool have reportedly turned their attention to PSG duo Barcola and Mbaye. Barcola is believed to be the club’s preferred option on the left, while Mbaye has been considered for the opposite flank.
Liverpool’s pursuit of Barcola has gathered momentum in recent weeks. The French winger is reportedly open to leaving PSG for Anfield and has shown little interest in extending his contract beyond 2028. PSG are also understood to have softened their stance on the player, who is no longer viewed as completely “untouchable.”
Romano adds that Liverpool and Barcola are close to agreeing personal terms. However, PSG are demanding a huge combined package of around €200 million for both Barcola and Mbaye, making a deal extremely difficult.
Mbaye move currently ‘off’
Romano says Liverpool remain keen to bring in two new wingers, although Cody Gakpo’s situation could influence their plans, with Tottenham Hotspur continuing to pursue the Dutchman.
As for Mbaye, Romano reports that his Liverpool move is currently “off” because PSG’s asking price is considered too high. The 17-year-old is reportedly viewed as too expensive at this stage.
German journalist Florian Plettenberg has also suggested that Liverpool could use another option on the right wing if Barcola arrives.
Plettenberg reports that Barcola remains Liverpool’s intended left-wing signing and that negotiations with PSG are continuing. He also claims the Reds remain confident of reaching an agreement before the transfer deadline.
Should Barcola arrive, teenage prospect Rio Ngumoha could reportedly be given a bigger role on the right side this season.
