Spurs Star Turns Down £40M Switch as £57M Deal Gets Sealed

Barcelona’s hunt for fresh options at the back has hit a snag, with Cristian Romero now heading elsewhere despite months of speculation linking him to the Camp Nou. The Tottenham centre-back had been tipped for a switch to Catalonia after Ronald Araujo’s loan exit to Liverpool opened up a spot, but it’s Atletico Madrid who have won the race for his signature.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Spurs and Atletico have struck a complete agreement worth €40 million for the Argentine, bringing his five-year spell in north London to a close and finally delivering the move to Spain he’s long been tipped for.

Several sides had shown interest in Romero, Barcelona included, but Romano’s update makes clear the Blaugrana stepped back from pursuing a deal, leaving the door open for Atletico to swoop in and get things done.

The move was helped along by Atletico offloading Nahuel Molina to Roma earlier in the week, freeing up both funds and a squad slot that allowed Diego Simeone’s side to fast-track talks with Tottenham.

As for Barcelona, their reluctance to commit €40 million suggests Romero was never truly top of their wishlist, whatever the earlier links suggested.

Losing Romero is still a big deal for Spurs. Over five seasons he’s become one of the club’s defensive cornerstones, prized for his combative style, comfort on the ball, and international pedigree — qualities that made him central to the side.

Joining Atletico gives Romero a fresh test in La Liga, at a club built on defensive solidity and a relentless competitive edge.

Barcelona aren’t done shopping though, and are said to be weighing up alternatives rather than rushing into anything. Real Betis defender Natan is reportedly high on their list should Hansi Flick push for another addition before the window shuts — meaning Romero’s Camp Nou chapter never really got past speculation before Atletico snapped him up for €40 million.
