James Maddison has publicly welcomed Andy Robertson to Tottenham Hotspur following the club’s confirmation of the Scottish left-back’s free transfer signing.
Robertson had been on Spurs’ radar as far back as January but opted to stay at Liverpool for the remainder of the season as they finished fifth in the Premier League. Tottenham officially announced on Friday that he will join when his Reds contract expires on 1 July, with the defender set to play a key role in Roberto De Zerbi’s plans for next season.
Maddison wasted no time in extending a warm welcome, taking to his Instagram story to reply to Robertson’s arrival video with “Welcome Andrew,” accompanied by several heart-face emojis and a tag. Robertson responded in kind on his own story with a simple “James” and a white heart. The pair have yet to share a pitch together but appear to have already struck up a close friendship.
It was a challenging 2025-26 campaign for Maddison, who managed just three appearances after suffering an ACL injury in pre-season. He did, however, play a part in Spurs’ survival push, featuring in each of their final three matches.
Despite speculation linking him with a return to former club Coventry City — now back in the Premier League under Frank Lampard — a departure this summer looks unlikely. De Zerbi has already shown faith in the 29-year-old, and Maddison is expected to be a central figure in the rebuild alongside his new teammate Robertson.
