Andy Robertson has revealed the thinking behind his decision to swap Liverpool for Tottenham Hotspur after nine years on Merseyside.
The Scotland left-back left Anfield as a free agent once his contract expired, having found himself behind Milos Kerkez in the pecking order during his final season there. Spurs had actually tried to land him back in January, but he and Liverpool agreed he’d see out the season first. Once he became available, Tottenham moved quickly and got the deal done on a Bosman.
Robertson didn’t hide his excitement about the switch, describing it as a fresh challenge after nearly a decade at one club. He said the move felt like the right fit for this stage of his career, and that once the chance came up he knew straight away he wanted to take it. His focus now, he explained, is on progressing and making an impact in a Spurs shirt.
He also confirmed talks over a move had gotten close back in January before falling through, with the switch only becoming a real possibility once that window shut. Robertson pointed to Tottenham’s size, facilities, stadium, and fanbase as major draws, someone who’s faced the club many times and seen the support firsthand. He acknowledged the club’s recent Premier League form hasn’t matched expectations, but praised the character shown in last season’s fight against relegation, adding that he’s already sensed the group’s determination not to repeat that struggle.
Roberto De Zerbi’s involvement was clearly a deciding factor too. Robertson said a phone conversation with the Italian coach and his staff left him impressed by their footballing knowledge and passion for how they want to play. He described the call as positive, noting that he and De Zerbi already had mutual awareness of each other’s qualities heading into the chat. Robertson called De Zerbi one of the best coaches in the game and said he’s eager to learn under him, adding that he believes the club is heading in the right direction at exactly the right time to join it.
