Tottenham skipper Cristian Romero has posted a short 15-word message on social media after being charged by the FA following his red card in the 2–1 defeat to Liverpool.
The centre-back was sent off late on against Arne Slot’s side after receiving two yellow cards, which automatically rules him out of Sunday’s away trip to Crystal Palace. The FA have since charged Romero for allegedly failing to leave the pitch promptly and for improper conduct towards referee John Brooks after his dismissal.
In a statement, the FA said Romero is accused of not exiting the field quickly enough and/or behaving in an aggressive or confrontational manner towards the referee following his 93rd-minute red card. He has until Friday, 2 January 2026, to respond.
Romero reacted on Instagram by sharing family photos from Christmas with his wife and two children, alongside the caption: “Christmas reminds us that the greatest gift is our family. I love you my loves.”
While he will miss the Palace game, Romero is expected to be available again for Tottenham’s New Year’s Day clash with Brentford. Spurs then host Sunderland before travelling to Bournemouth on January 7.
Speaking earlier this week, Thomas Frank backed his captain, highlighting Romero’s passion and leadership. The Spurs boss said the Argentine raises the team’s level at his best, referencing big performances in major matches. Frank admitted Romero’s intensity can sometimes boil over but stressed it is something the defender is trying to manage better.
Frank also suggested Romero was angered by what he felt was an obvious foul before the incident. While conceding that Romero made an error by touching the referee, leading to the booking, Frank argued the situation was sparked by a controversial decision — adding that with highly driven players, emotion can occasionally take over.
