Setting Reed’s spectacular strike aside, debate quickly arose over whether Florian Wirtz’s 57th-minute equaliser should have stood.
The Liverpool No.7 finished clinically after being picked out by Conor Bradley, but celebrations were halted when the assistant referee flagged for offside.
Referee Craig Pawson initially disallowed the goal, judging Wirtz to have been beyond the last defender.
After a prolonged VAR review, that call was overturned, with Issa Diop deemed to be playing the former Bayer Leverkusen star onside as he guided a close-range effort past Bernd Leno into the bottom-left corner. The Premier League later addressed the incident on X (formerly Twitter), confirming the goal had been checked by VAR.
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, however, was unconvinced by the decision. “I know camera angles can be deceptive, but when you use the penalty spot as a reference, I just can’t believe that’s been given,” the ex-defender turned pundit said.
Following the draw with Marco Silva’s Fulham, Arne Slot’s side now turn their attention to a challenging trip to league leaders Arsenal.
That match is followed by two home fixtures — against Barnsley in the FA Cup and Burnley in the Premier League.
