Former Tottenham Hotspur chairman Alan Sugar has ignited discussion among fans after openly urging the Lewis family to consider a daring approach for ex-Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp.
Klopp left Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 season, having signalled well in advance that his time at Anfield was coming to an end. During almost a decade on Merseyside, he rebuilt the club into regular title challengers and delivered major trophies, including the Premier League. After stepping away in 2024, the German opted against an immediate return to management, instead taking on a senior strategic role as Red Bull’s Head of Global Football.
That career move has seen Klopp distance himself from the day-to-day intensity of elite club management, favouring a broader, behind-the-scenes influence across Red Bull’s football network. This context made Sugar’s suggestion all the more striking. Having previously owned Spurs himself, Sugar understands the demands of top-level football, which is why his call for Tottenham to pursue Klopp caught the attention of supporters.
Posting on X, Sugar encouraged the Lewis family to flex their financial muscle and attempt to lure Klopp back to the Premier League. He framed the idea as a “win-win,” claiming Tottenham’s owners have a “huge fortune” and could both attract a manager of Klopp’s calibre and properly support him in the January transfer window. According to Sugar, bringing in a proven winner would instantly boost Spurs’ stature and ambition.
Tottenham fans, however, reacted with widespread disbelief. Many dismissed the idea outright, branding it unrealistic. One supporter quipped: “There’s delusions. There’s mega delusions. Then there’s this.” Another added: “There is no chance he comes back to England to manage Spurs.” Others responded with humour, suggesting Spurs had a better chance of signing Kylian Mbappé than landing Klopp, while some simply questioned whether the suggestion was serious at all.
Overall, the mood among supporters suggests that while Klopp’s quality is undeniable, the conversation feels largely academic. Persuading him to leave a high-profile executive position, return to England, and take charge of a club still striving for consistency would be an enormous task.
Even with pressure beginning to build on current head coach Thomas Frank, most fans believe that viewing Klopp as a realistic solution is overly hopeful. While Sugar’s comments have sparked debate, a move of this scale appears far more like fantasy than a genuine possibility for Tottenham.
