Andy Robertson has already made his stance clear to Thomas Frank as Tottenham open January transfer talks with Liverpool. Spurs had initially earmarked the 31-year-old for a potential free transfer in the summer when his contract is due to expire, but Ben Davies’ injury has accelerated their interest.
Robertson’s playing time at Anfield has dropped following the arrival of Milos Kerkez, leaving the Scotland captain to weigh up his future. Speaking to BBC Sport earlier this month, he admitted he is considering his options but knows exactly what he wants next. While he would like to remain at Liverpool, he stressed that the final decision will depend on discussions with the club and his family after a demanding summer.
Since joining Liverpool from Hull City for £8 million in 2017, Robertson has enjoyed huge success, winning two Premier League titles and the Champions League. However, he has recently found himself behind Kerkez in the pecking order, managing just 181 minutes since mid-December as the Hungarian has grown into form.
Robertson has been open about his frustration with reduced minutes, insisting he is the type of player who always wants to be on the pitch. He explained that he has often played through injuries and below full fitness because of his desire to contribute, and believes any player content with sitting on the bench lacks the right mentality. While accepting his altered role this season, he made it clear that regular football still matters most to him.
With that in mind, a move to Spurs this month appears increasingly likely, even after Tottenham confirmed the signing of Brazilian left-back Souza. Destiny Udogie is expected to be Thomas Frank’s first choice when fully fit, but Robertson would still be expected to feature regularly for the rest of the season if the transfer goes through.
