Dejan Kulusevski has vowed to defy expectations and fight his way back to full fitness in time for this summer’s World Cup.
The 25-year-old has yet to make an appearance this season after undergoing patella surgery last May. He was visibly emotional as he watched Sweden secure a thrilling 3-2 win over Poland in Stockholm, a result that confirmed their place at the tournament in North America.
In an interview with Viaplay, Kulusevski admitted the road to recovery will not be easy but maintained strong belief in his ability to return to action. He emphasized that, despite spending a year on the sidelines, he is confident he can complete his comeback and play a role on football’s biggest stage. He also highlighted Sweden’s competitive mindset, insisting the team intends to challenge the top nations rather than simply participate.
The midfielder recently had a minor follow-up procedure on his knee, describing it as an important milestone in his rehabilitation. He revealed the surgery helped doctors pinpoint and fix the root of the problem, leaving him optimistic that his recovery is progressing in the right direction.
Throughout his rehabilitation, Kulusevski has stayed closely connected to the squad, even travelling to Valencia to support Sweden during their play-off semi-final against Ukraine before returning home to watch them secure qualification.
Despite his eagerness to contribute on the pitch, he stressed that the focus should remain on the players currently representing the team, making it clear his priority is to support his teammates and celebrate their achievements while continuing his recovery journey.
