Cristian Romero Delivers Strong Message Shortly After Transfer Deadline

Cristian Romero has openly voiced his frustration with Tottenham Hotspur’s lack of transfer activity on deadline day.

Following a busy month across the Premier League, the January transfer window officially came to an end on Monday night, with clubs now unable to register new players until June 15.

While a number of top-flight sides remained active until the final stages — most notably Manchester City, who added Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi — Spurs fans were left disappointed by their club’s quiet approach, particularly with Tottenham languishing in 14th place.

Romero appears to share that disappointment.

Moments after the window closed, the Tottenham captain posted a pointed message on social media that seemed to criticise the club’s handling of recruitment.

The post came shortly after Spurs battled to an impressive draw against Manchester City, despite a severe injury crisis that ruled out nine senior players. Romero himself was substituted at half-time, with head coach Thomas Frank later explaining that the defender had been feeling unwell.

Rather than dwelling on the result alone, Romero used the opportunity to draw attention to the squad’s lack of depth and limited transfer reinforcements. In an Instagram post, he praised his teammates’ commitment but expressed disbelief at the situation, highlighting that only 11 players were available and describing the circumstances as unacceptable.

He also emphasised the group’s resolve to remain united, take responsibility and keep fighting, while thanking supporters for their continued support.

Romero’s remarks, shared shortly after the transfer window closed without any late arrivals, underlined his growing frustration with Tottenham’s recruitment strategy.

Overall, Spurs completed just two signings during the window, recruiting Conor Gallagher from Chelsea for £34 million and 19-year-old defender Souza from Santos for £13 million. The club also sanctioned the sale of Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace for £35 million, after signing him for £47.5 million in 2023.

To make matters worse, several key players — including James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Micky van de Ven, Mohammed Kudus, Richarlison and others — remain sidelined with injuries, further deepening Tottenham’s difficulties.
