Tottenham Hotspur supporters may not welcome the latest update from an Argentine journalist regarding Cristian Romero following the defender’s recent outburst.
The Spurs captain has never been afraid to criticise the club’s hierarchy, and he appeared to do so once again on transfer deadline day. Romero labelled it “disgraceful” that Tottenham were left with only 11 fully fit players for the clash against Manchester City, a clear message to those in charge that reinforcements were needed in January.
Many Spurs fans have sided with Romero, sharing his frustration over the club’s lack of activity in the transfer market.
However, Argentine journalist Gastón Edul has now reported that the centre-back has decided to leave Tottenham. According to Edul, Romero was close to receiving formal offers from La Liga clubs last summer, and interest from Spain remains strong.
The journalist claims the 27-year-old does not see his long-term future at N17 and plans to seek a move at the end of the season. Writing on X, Edul stated that Romero has interest from La Liga and another league, adding that he is expected to depart Tottenham during the June transfer window.
Romero’s dissatisfaction with the Spurs hierarchy is said to stem from unfulfilled assurances. Despite strong interest in his services, he was reportedly prepared to commit to a long-term deal last summer, but a source has suggested he now feels promises were not honoured.
That said, football can change quickly, and several months remain before the summer window opens. Any club hoping to sign Romero is also likely to face a tough negotiation, with his lengthy contract meaning Tottenham will demand a significant fee for their captain.
