Tottenham Hotspur have faced a more severe injury crisis than any other Premier League club this season.
The campaign began with several key players already unavailable, and both Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison remain out for the long term. Dominic Solanke is also continuing his recovery from foot surgery, with no confirmed return date.
Fitness issues have affected multiple Spurs players throughout the season, and another scare emerged during Sunday’s gritty 1–0 win over Crystal Palace when Lucas Bergvall was forced off with a knock.
The midfielder appeared to tweak his groin while turning, an incident that largely flew under the radar but sparked concern among supporters—especially with first-choice No.10 Xavi Simons suspended.
Frank eases Bergvall fears ahead of Brentford test
Spurs return to Premier League action on Thursday against Brentford, raising worries that Bergvall could miss the meeting with Thomas Frank’s former side.
However, speaking to Lilywhite Rose, Frank sought to calm those fears, confirming the Swede is “OK” and has not suffered a serious injury. While details were limited, the Spurs boss said there is only a “small doubt” and expressed confidence that Bergvall will be fit.
“Lucas is OK. I am quite positive he’ll be available. There is a small doubt, but I’m pretty sure he’ll be OK.”
Tottenham do have midfield depth, with Pape Matar Sarr and Archie Gray among the options, while the experience of João Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur should help against Brentford. Still, being without both Bergvall and Simons in the No.10 role would be a major blow. Should Bergvall be ruled out, Wilson Odobert—who caught the eye from the bench against Palace—could be an interesting alternative, offering close control and understated creativity.
Although Bergvall is more naturally an No.8 than a No.10, Spurs fans will hope Frank has already planned accordingly. The main positive from the latest update is that the Swedish international has avoided a serious issue—welcome news for Tottenham at a crucial point in the season.
