Tottenham are reportedly weighing up Enzo Maresca as one of several candidates to replace Thomas Frank should the club decide to sack him.
Maresca became a free agent on New Year’s Day after leaving Chelsea following a public fallout with the Stamford Bridge hierarchy. However, former Spurs scout Mick Brown has warned that Tottenham may be cautious about appointing him due to concerns over his temperament.
There are also fears his links to Chelsea would not sit well with supporters, who are already unhappy with the board. While Maresca is among the names under consideration, Spurs are expected to assess other options before making a final decision if Frank is dismissed.
Football Insider revealed on 26 January that Tottenham are delaying any move against Frank because of uncertainty over the availability of suitable replacements. With few top managers currently on the market, Maresca’s availability has put him on Spurs’ radar.
Brown told Football Insider that Maresca’s free-agent status naturally makes him a contender, but questioned whether his history of disputes at previous clubs, including Leicester and Chelsea, makes him the right fit for Tottenham. He also suggested that appointing a former Chelsea manager could spark further backlash from fans.
Meanwhile, pressure continues to mount on Frank after a 2-2 draw with Burnley extended Spurs’ poor run to just two wins in 14 league matches. Tottenham sit 14th in the table, only three points above the relegation zone, and Football Insider reports that Frank will be sacked if the club are pulled deeper into the survival fight.
A daunting run of fixtures against Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle and Arsenal now looms, with the outcome likely to determine Frank’s future.
