Liverpool now look likely to miss out on signing Nico Schlotterbeck, at least for the time being, although the possibility of a future move has not been entirely ruled out.
Journalist Florian Plettenberg reports that Borussia Dortmund have finalized an agreement on a new contract for the defender, which would keep him at the club until 2031.
Under the proposed terms, the Germany international would become Dortmund’s highest-paid player, with a release clause set to take effect in the summer of 2027. At present, both Liverpool and Real Madrid are not pursuing the deal, but the clause could reopen the door for a transfer later on.
Schlotterbeck has delivered consistently strong performances during his spell at Dortmund and was viewed as a potential reinforcement for Liverpool’s backline. The club had been linked with the defender in several reports, and earlier claims from Bild suggested he was hesitant about extending his contract.
A transfer would have provided Liverpool with a long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk and additional depth in case Ibrahima Konaté leaves amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding his future.
For now, however, Dortmund have successfully secured the defender’s commitment despite notable interest, with Real Madrid also no longer considered a contender.
