New interim boss Igor Tudor faces a daunting first assignment as Tottenham manager — an explosive North London Derby this weekend.
Spurs host fierce rivals Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in what promises to be one of the Premier League’s standout fixtures. The pressure could hardly be greater. It will be Tudor’s first match in charge, with Tottenham still nervously battling to pull clear of the relegation zone. Meanwhile, Arsenal arrive at the summit of the table, chasing a first league crown in 22 years. Their midweek collapse against Wolves, where they let a two-goal lead slip, only adds extra tension to an already heated encounter.
Tudor has moved quickly to lay down a marker. Fans will hope to see Spurs ease their relegation concerns while simultaneously denting Arsenal’s title charge. There is also renewed optimism following the departure of Thomas Frank, whose tenure ended amid growing frustration and audible discontent from the stands.
In his first interview with club media, the Croatian emphasised bravery, intensity, and attacking intent. He made it clear he does not believe in setting up his team merely to settle for a point.
Tactically, Tudor is expected to implement a more aggressive system. His favoured 3-4-2-1 formation, with two attacking midfielders supporting a central striker, could revitalise Tottenham’s forward line.
Dominic Solanke is likely to lead the attack, while Xavi Simons has strengthened his case for a role in one of the advanced positions after impressive recent displays. The remaining attacking spot remains undecided.
Randal Kolo Muani — who previously worked under Tudor at Juventus — is an option, though he may be more effective through the middle.
Mathys Tel also presents a strong alternative. The young forward found opportunities limited under Frank despite his pace and direct style, leaving many supporters questioning his lack of game time.
Earlier in the season, former interim manager Tim Sherwood criticised Tel’s performance in the defeat to West Ham, calling it disappointing after he was substituted for Solanke during Soccer Saturday coverage.
However, Tudor’s arrival could offer the France Under-21 international a fresh start. Playing alongside Simons with freedom to drift centrally and wide may better suit the £30 million signing from Bayern Munich.
With his pace and sharp movement, Tel has the tools to exploit space behind Arsenal’s defence and provide crucial support to the main striker — and this derby could signal the beginning of a new chapter in his Premier League story.
