Callum Hudson-Odoi struck twice and Ibrahim Sangaré also found the net, but Tottenham’s problems stemmed from a defensive lapse midway through the first half. In the 28th minute, Cristian Romero played the ball back to Guglielmo Vicario, who hesitated before attempting a dangerous pass to Archie Gray just outside the box. Sangaré read it, won possession and teed up Hudson-Odoi, with Vicario clearly annoyed afterward and directing blame toward Gray.
Analyzing the incident on Sky Sports’ Extra Time, Jamie Carragher was critical of the goalkeeper. “This isn’t simply about playing out from the back — it’s a mistake on his weaker foot,” Carragher said. “Vicario has a habit of pointing fingers, and it happened again today. Gray could have done better, but the goalkeeper caused the issue. There was no pressure, and the obvious pass was out wide.”
Vicario has come under fire at times this season for similar errors and was even booed by Spurs supporters following a mistake against Fulham last month. Even so, his numbers remain strong, having prevented 2.3 goals more than expected — an indication Spurs could be in a worse position without him.
Carragher doubled down on his criticism, highlighting the unnecessary and poorly weighted pass to Gray. He argued that even with a perfect touch, Gray would still have been closed down by Sangaré. “For me, the responsibility lies entirely with the goalkeeper,” he added.
The defeat leaves Tottenham 11th in the Premier League, with just one win from their last seven matches.
