Julián Álvarez has revealed that he spoke with Tottenham captain Cristian Romero about a possible move to Atlético Madrid last summer.
Diego Simeone was keen to bring the Spurs defender to the Wanda Metropolitano, but Atlético were unwilling to meet Tottenham’s valuation. Romero ultimately remained in north London and signed a lucrative new four-year deal in August, putting an end to any remaining transfer rumours.
Speaking to MARCA, Álvarez admitted he would have loved to link up with his Argentina teammate:
“Yes, of course. I would have liked to. Cuti is one of the best defenders in the world. We spend a lot of time together with the national team and I see him as a real star—strong, competitive, a great defender.”
He added that they did discuss the possibility of the move, but “a few details” stopped it from happening. Still, he hopes they can play together one day.
Despite Álvarez’s comments, Romero’s transfer to Atlético was never close, as personal terms were not agreed.
Back in June, Simeone openly admitted his admiration for the defender, saying:
“Do I want Cuti Romero? Of course! He’s a fantastic player.”
Following Son Heung-min’s move to LAFC, Thomas Frank named Romero as Tottenham’s new captain. After signing his new contract, Romero said:
“These last two weeks have been huge—becoming captain and now extending my contract. I’m very happy. For me, this is the best club in the world.”
Romero has enjoyed a strong period on the pitch too, scoring twice in Spurs’ 2-2 draw with Newcastle and registering an assist in their 3-0 Champions League win over Slavia Prague. His form comes after missing six matches in October with an adductor injury before returning against Chelsea in early November.
