Liverpool’s long-term plans in central defence are still taking shape, and a familiar face has now resurfaced as a possible answer.
Football Insider reports that the Reds are seriously weighing up a future move to re-sign Jarell Quansah from Bayer Leverkusen, as part of a broader succession plan at the back.
Quansah departed Anfield in the summer of 2025 for a fee of around £35 million, a transfer that formed part of Arne Slot’s major squad reshuffle. While the sale of the academy graduate surprised some at the time, Liverpool safeguarded their interests by inserting a buy-back clause into the deal.
That clause, which becomes active in 2027, would allow Liverpool to bring Quansah back for a pre-agreed fee if they decide to do so.
Why Liverpool are considering Quansah again
Liverpool’s renewed interest stems from uncertainty in their current defensive ranks. Ibrahima Konaté is entering the final phase of his contract and could leave for free at the end of the season if an extension is not agreed.
Meanwhile, captain Virgil van Dijk is edging towards his mid-30s, naturally raising questions about long-term succession and workload management.
The club have already taken steps by signing Jérémy Jacquet from Stade Rennais, but internal discussions suggest Liverpool may still want another centre-back—ideally one with Premier League experience and a strong understanding of the club’s demands.
Since joining Leverkusen, Quansah has continued to develop, gaining valuable Bundesliga and European experience. His calmness on the ball, aerial dominance and improving positional sense have caught the eye of Liverpool’s recruitment team, who remain closely monitoring his progress.
His rise has also been recognised internationally. The 23-year-old made his senior England debut last year, starting in a 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Albania, a landmark moment that highlighted his steady upward trajectory.
With Konaté’s future unresolved, Van Dijk moving into the latter stages of his career, and competition for top-class centre-backs growing, the chance to re-sign a matured academy product is an appealing option for TOTTENHAM Liverpool.
