Liverpool confirm loan return as question grows over what went wrong

Liverpool have confirmed that Lewis Koumas has returned from his loan spell at Birmingham City, a move that naturally prompts questions about why the stint failed to gain real momentum.

A brief statement on Liverpoolfc.com confirmed the development, noting that the 20-year-old featured 25 times in all competitions and scored once during his time away.

While the return is not alarming in terms of fitness or availability, it is concerning when judged against the purpose of a loan move — regular starts, rhythm, and a defined role.
In simple terms, the spell did not work because Koumas did not play enough.

SofaScore records 23 appearances, but only seven starts and 771 minutes overall. That amounts to sporadic substitute outings rather than the consistent 70–90 minute runs young attackers need to sharpen their decision-making.

This lack of continuity explains why the loan ended without real progress in either direction.
Koumas had already shown he could cope with the demands of the Championship during his previous spell at Stoke, which makes the Birmingham experience feel more like a sideways step than a forward one.

He even hinted at the issue himself earlier this month, pointing to the contrast with last season’s minutes and revealing that discussions had taken place with Liverpool.

A look at his 2025/26 league statistics underlines the problem. One goal, limited shooting numbers and three big chances missed suggest opportunities were rare and not taken convincingly enough to secure a regular starting place. It reflects a player rotated in and out, rather than trusted to play through form dips.

From Liverpool’s perspective, the next step is unclear. Arne Slot has relied little on youth this season, making a straightforward path into the first team feel unlikely.

Koumas now appears to need a reset — another run of games elsewhere that can turn this loan return into genuine progress. The ability has never been in doubt. He remains a Wales international, has already scored on his senior Liverpool debut, and comes from a strong footballing background as the son of Jason Koumas.

Ultimately, though, development is driven by minutes, not credentials.
Despite staying fit and featuring regularly at Birmingham, the loan failed to deliver its main objective. Limited starts, modest output and a lack of sustained trust meant the move never truly ignited.
