Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Lucas Moura has been rushed to hospital after suffering a concerning injury during São Paulo FC’s 1–0 loss to Atlético Mineiro.
The 33-year-old attacker came on as a substitute but endured a nightmare cameo, lasting just 12 minutes before a heavy collision with Tomás Cuello. The impact left Moura with significant facial blows and two fractured ribs, leading to immediate breathing difficulties. Medical staff rushed onto the pitch, and he was stretchered off before being taken straight to hospital.
São Paulo later confirmed that Moura is undergoing medical evaluations in Belo Horizonte. The club added that he will return to São Paulo for continued treatment once his condition stabilises.
The injury represents a major setback for São Paulo, who had been enjoying strong form with a six-match unbeaten run. The defeat not only halted their momentum but also denied them the chance to climb level at the top of the table with rivals Palmeiras.
Moura’s return to São Paulo in 2023 was seen as a homecoming after a successful spell in Europe. During his time in England with Tottenham, he became a fan favourite—most memorably for his dramatic hat-trick against Ajax in the 2019 UEFA Champions League semi-final, a performance that secured Spurs a place in the final against Liverpool.
Further updates on Moura’s condition are expected in the coming days.
