Mathys Tel reportedly poised to leave Tottenham this month following treatment under Thomas Frank

Mathys Tel could be considering an early exit from Tottenham when the January transfer window opens.
The French forward completed a permanent move to Spurs last summer after a loan spell in North London during the latter half of the previous season. However, he has found it difficult to make an immediate impact and may become the latest attacker to move on, following Brennan Johnson’s switch to Crystal Palace.

According to Fabrice Hawkins on 9 January, Tel is dissatisfied with his current situation at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and could push for a move away.

Why Thomas Frank plays a key role
Although Tel scored in Tottenham’s recent 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth, his long-term future remains uncertain. Head coach Thomas Frank has handed him just five Premier League starts, and Tel was initially excluded from the Champions League squad before being brought in to cover for the injured Dominic Solanke.

Overall, the former Bayern Munich player has managed only 465 league minutes, scoring three goals. The report suggests Tel is frustrated by his lack of game time, especially as he is keen to secure regular minutes to boost his chances of making France’s World Cup squad. Spurs, however, are said to be reluctant to approve either a permanent transfer or a loan move.

Why Tottenham need to keep Tel
Tottenham cannot afford to lose attacking quality, and Tel has already shown flashes of his ability. During his time in Germany, he registered 16 goals and seven assists across 83 appearances before joining Spurs.

Providing him with more starts could be crucial in preventing both a January departure and potential unrest in the summer. Frank needs depth and quality in forward areas, not further exits that would weaken the squad.

Tel has the talent to become a top-level player, but he requires consistent opportunities rather than limited cameos from the bench, which only risk increasing his frustration.
