Tottenham have wrapped up their second signing of the January transfer window.
With Thomas Frank under growing pressure following a difficult run of results, Spurs faced a clear decision: part ways with the coach who succeeded Ange Postecoglou in the summer, or show faith in him by strengthening the squad.
After bringing in Conor Gallagher, the club chose the latter approach and have now confirmed another addition.
Souza joins Spurs on a long-term deal
Tottenham have been tracking Brazilian youngster Souza for several months, with the left-back making waves in his homeland. The 19-year-old broke into Santos’ first team in 2024 and has since made 38 appearances in all competitions, quickly establishing himself as a highly rated prospect.
Spurs officially announced his signing on Thursday via a series of Instagram posts, confirming he has agreed a long-term contract. Souza will compete with Destiny Udogie for a place at left-back.
The announcement caught attention online, with Neymar — a former Santos star — among those to like the post, alongside Tottenham defender Pedro Porro. Neymar, who began his career at Santos and returned to the club last year, has previously shared the pitch with Spurs’ new signing.
Frank welcomes Souza to North London
Breaking into Frank’s starting XI won’t be easy, with Udogie currently ahead in the pecking order, but the Italian’s inconsistency could open the door for Souza to earn minutes this season. At just 19, patience will be key as he adapts to English football.
Speaking to Tottenham’s official website, Frank praised the youngster, saying:
“I’m delighted to welcome Souza to the squad. He’s a talented and exciting young full-back — technically strong and positive going forward. We believe he’s one of the brightest left-back prospects in the game, someone who can contribute now and grow even more in the future.”
Souza will wear the No. 38 shirt, the same number Udogie took when he first arrived at the club in 2023.
