David Ornstein of The Athletic has dismissed growing speculation that Liverpool are considering replacing Arne Slot with Xabi Alonso, reaffirming that the club remains fully committed to the Dutch manager. Despite a disappointing Premier League campaign that has seen the Reds suffer 10 defeats this season, Anfield’s message is one of stability rather than reactionary change.
Reports from BILD suggested Michael Edwards has been in contact with Alonso, fueling rumors of a potential managerial switch next season. Ornstein clarified that this “noise” does not reflect the club’s actual position.
Speaking on The Athletic FC Podcast (via AnythingLFC_), Ornstein confirmed Liverpool are planning their future with Slot in charge. Internally, there are no plans to dismiss him, even amid mounting pressure. He stated:
“All our information, despite reports to the contrary, is that Liverpool are sticking with Arne Slot. There’s no thought to changing coach. They are planning with him, and their priority is to give him the profile of squad to succeed.”
While Slot has the club’s backing, pressure is set to rise as the 2025/26 season reaches its final stretch. Liverpool currently sit fifth, trailing Aston Villa for the last guaranteed Champions League spot. Missing out on Europe’s elite competition could make Slot’s position increasingly fragile.
With Xabi Alonso reportedly eager to return to management and influence squad decisions, speculation around a potential Anfield comeback will continue until Slot can stabilize results on the pitch.
