Roy Keane Labels Pascal Chimbonda His Worst Sunderland Signing as Defender Hits Back

Roy Keane has reignited debate after naming one of his former Sunderland A.F.C. signings as the worst decision of his managerial career. The Manchester United F.C. legend managed Sunderland from 2006 to 2008 and later had a two-year spell at Ipswich Town F.C..

Keane enjoyed early success on Wearside, winning the Championship in 2006/07 and keeping the club in the Premier League the following season. However, not all of his transfer decisions proved successful. He now admits regretting the signing of defender Pascal Chimbonda from Tottenham Hotspur F.C..

Speaking on The Overlap with Gary Neville, Keane revealed he had been warned against signing Chimbonda but pushed ahead, believing his Premier League experience would help. Instead, he found the defender difficult to manage, describing him as “hard work.” Keane resigned in December 2008 with Sunderland sitting 18th.

He later claimed that after his departure, someone from Tottenham’s coaching staff contacted him while considering re-signing Chimbonda. Although Keane offered a measured response, Spurs completed the deal. Reflecting on the episode, he suggested managerial pressure can sometimes lead to poor judgment.

In contrast, Keane pointed to the signing of Djibril Cissé as a risk that paid off, praising the former Liverpool F.C. striker as one of the best professionals he worked with.

Chimbonda has since responded on the Undr The Cosh podcast, expressing surprise at being labelled Keane’s worst signing. He said they had shared a positive conversation before his move and questioned the criticism. While acknowledging Keane’s achievements as a player, he was more critical of his managerial approach, suggesting he lacked presence on the training ground.

The exchange has sparked fresh discussion about Keane’s record in management — and the balance between honest reflection and public criticism of former players.
